You're 10 Steps Away From Installing A Toilet
Sometimes, that throne has simply worked so hard that it needs to be thrown in the tip and replaced. But there are other reasons why you might be wondering how to install a toilet. Perhaps yours is just old and outdated. Maybe it simply won't stop clogging. Perhaps you want a shiny, rimless, water-efficient one? Your toilet might be cracked, ugly, wobbly, or dull. Perhaps those mineral deposits in the bottle of the bowl simply won't budge.
Plumbing A Toilet - The DIY Way!
Are you even allowed to try installing a toilet for yourself in Queensland? The answer is: Not really. The state government describes it as 'notifiable work', meaning a real-life, fully-qualified and certified Queensland plumber needs to do it for you. However, if you're simply replacing the physical toilet like-for-like and aren't going to touch the plumbing in any significant way, you might just get away with unscrewing a few bolts and bolting a new favourite seat in your bathroom - right?
1. Got your toilet?
Because significant plumbing work requires your friendly local Gold Coast plumber, you'll need a like-for-like or fully compatible new toilet that fits the space and does pretty much exactly what the old one does. If you think a new rough-in might need to be measured, stop right now and call that plumber!
2. Got your tools?
If you don't have the toolbox of a keen do-it-yourself-er, plumbing a toilet definitely isn't for you. And we're talking about some extras here on top of the normal stuff, including a caulk gun, slip joint pliers - and a potential visit to the plumbing supplies shop for a toilet supply tube, wax ring with flange and Teflon tape.
3. Remove the old one
Before anything else, empty the toilet and turn the mains off. Then empty the toilet again.
Next, find the main coupling nut for the water supply and tank bolts and undo it all - including the bolts that fix the toilet to the floor. Having trouble? Whip out the hacksaw.
4. Deal with the wax rings
This sits on the sewer opening - and the old one is repulsive even to the most experienced plumber! Do what you can to get all the residue off, and then look after your lungs and family by sticking something into that waste outlet to plug the gross fumes.
5. Put in the new bolts
Remembering to get rid of whatever you plugged the outlet with, you're going to put those shiny new toilet bolts into the flange slots. Then enjoy the moment as you install that brand-new wax ring on the flange.
6. Position your new toilet
Now it's just a matter of lifting that new toilet into its prideful place, making sure the bolts all align beautifully. The trickiest part here is eliminating any wobble - which can be fixed with some folded-up paper or an old washer. When you're happy, screw up those toilet nuts.
7. Connect the cistern
Hopefully, your new toilet is complete with a new cistern including fill and flush valves. If not, you'll need to read the instructions on your product - but after that, it's a simple case of securing the spud washer and tightening the spud nut.
8. Remember the valves
Again, with a bit of luck and good planning, you won't have to worry about tweaking and positioning the fill valve. Just make sure the valve shank is in the right place and then tighten it all up.
9. Tighten it all up
Haven't forgotten the washers? Everything properly tightened? Remember, over-tightening can cause serious damage.
10. You're almost done!
The last things to do are:
- Re-attaching the water supply
- Checking for leaks
- Celebrating!
